Ireland’s Carlow County Council Approves 73-Hectare Solar Energy Project
Carlow County Council, Ireland, has granted planning permission for a substantial solar farm spanning approximately 73 hectares across seven townlands in County Carlow. The approved development by Ballyloo Solar Farm Limited includes land in Ballybar Lower, Ballybar Upper, Ballycarney, Ballyloo, Linkardstown, Park, and Tinryland.
The solar energy facility will consist of ground-mounted panels, 11 single-storey electrical inverter/transformer stations, three spare parts containers, and three weather stations. Additional infrastructure includes underground cabling across private land and public roads (L1010, L3051, L3052, and L3050), two horizontal directional drills under the M9 motorway and L3050, and three watercourse/deck crossings.
Access to the site will be via the L1022 and L1010 roads. A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) was submitted with the application to assess environmental impacts.
The project's operational lifespan is expected to be 40 years, although planning permission has been granted for an initial 10-year development period. The planning approval includes 36 conditions aimed at guiding construction, operation, and environmental compliance.
This development forms part of Ireland's continued push toward renewable energy infrastructure and regional sustainability efforts.
