Meta Explores Nuclear Energy to Power AI and Data Center Growth

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to nuclear developers as part of its plan to secure 1-4 GW of nuclear generation capacity in the U.S. by the early 2030s. This initiative aligns with Meta's commitment to sustainability and its energy-intensive AI and data center operations.

The company seeks partnerships with nuclear developers to handle the permitting, design, financing, construction, and operation of the proposed plants. According to Meta, nuclear energy offers firm, baseload power critical for supporting its data centers and local communities.

Meta has invested in solar, wind, geothermal, and battery storage for over a decade but recognizes nuclear energy's unique potential to diversify and stabilize electric grids. The company notes that nuclear projects are capital-intensive and have longer development cycles, requiring early engagement to meet operational and contractual requirements.

In addition to nuclear plans, Meta announced a $10 billion investment in a 1,500-MW data center in northeast Louisiana, powered by natural gas but matched with 100% renewable energy use. This 4-million-square-foot facility will be Meta's largest to date.

Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are also adopting nuclear energy to address their growing energy demands. Meta's latest initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward clean, reliable baseload energy to support AI-driven innovation.

Proposals for Meta's nuclear project must be submitted by February 7, 2025, following an initial qualification intake by January 3, 2025.
