Mississippi to Invest $1.8 Billion in New Solar Farms Across Seven Counties
Mississippi is set to experience a significant boost in renewable energy with the announcement of six new solar farms across the state, representing more than $1.8 billion in private investments. These projects are expected to generate over 1,400 megawatts of clean power, enough to supply hundreds of thousands of homes.
The solar farms will be located in Hinds, Holmes, Lowndes, Lee, Union, Jasper, and Pontotoc Counties, with individual investments ranging from $175 million to $650 million. Officials highlight the potential for reduced reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and enhanced grid stability.
The developments are projected to create approximately 1,300 temporary construction jobs and around 30 long-term service positions. Local governments and school districts stand to benefit from increased property tax revenues, estimated in the tens of millions over several decades.
Louie Miller of the Mississippi Sierra Club emphasized the environmental benefits, noting solar power produces no pollution or off-gassing, unlike traditional energy sources.
Previous solar projects in Mississippi have led to increased property values and significant growth in tax revenue, setting a promising precedent for these new installations.
Homeowners are also encouraged to explore solar panel installations to reduce their electricity bills and improve energy efficiency, with tools like EnergySage and partnerships such as Mitsubishi's heat pump program facilitating this transition.
