Mitsubishi Power Completes 50MW Biomass Plant in Japan

Mitsubishi Power, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has successfully completed the construction of a 50-megawatt (MW) biomass-fired power plant in Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The facility, known as the Hyuga Biomass Power Plant, was developed by a consortium led by MHI under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract and is now operational.

The plant will be run by Hyuga Biomass Power Co., Ltd., a special purpose company (SPC) jointly owned by Osaka Gas Co., Ltd., ITOCHU Corporation, Tokyo Century Corporation, and Tokyo Energy & Systems Inc. The facility incorporates advanced technologies such as a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler and a steam turbine, ensuring high combustion and fuel efficiency for biomass energy production. These innovations are expected to reduce the environmental impact of the power plant significantly.

In the project, MHI supplied the main power equipment, including the steam turbine and CFB boiler, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Power Environmental Solutions provided the air quality control systems. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation delivered the generator and related electrical components. Fujita Corporation managed civil engineering and construction.
