New York Invests $11M in Clean Hydrogen Innovation

The State of New York has awarded more than $11 million to five research and development projects focused on clean hydrogen technologies, aiming to accelerate the state's transition to a zero-emissions energy system.

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the funding supports innovations in hydrogen storage, transportation, and infrastructure resilience, with a particular focus on hard-to-electrify sectors such as transportation and health care.

The projects were selected under the Advanced Fuels and Thermal Energy Research Program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The goal is to demonstrate the viability of clean hydrogen in reducing emissions and supporting grid reliability, especially in disadvantaged communities.

Among the recipients:

  • Stony Brook University will receive over $4.9 million to build a hydrogen storage system at Northwell Health Hospital.

  • National Grid Ventures was awarded $2 million to deploy a 100% hydrogen-fueled linear generator at the Northport Power Plant.

  • Plug Power Inc., in partnership with Verne, also received $2 million to develop advanced hydrogen delivery trailers.

  • SWITCH Maritime will use $2 million to create New York's first hydrogen fuel cell-electric ferry.

  • GTI Energy was granted over $220,000 to evaluate the state's potential for large-scale hydrogen storage.

The funding comes from the state's $6 billion Clean Energy Fund, part of a broader climate agenda targeting net-zero emissions by 2050.
