NYPA Doubles Clean Energy Pipeline to 7 GW in Updated Strategic Plan
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has released a draft Updated Strategic Plan outlining a significant expansion in its renewable energy pipeline, now including more than 200 projects totaling nearly 7 GW of clean energy capacity -- double the amount in its original January 2025 plan.
The new draft includes 20 renewable generation projects and 156 energy storage projects representing over 3.8 GW of additional capacity. In total, 64 projects -- comprising 17 solar arrays, 3 wind farms, and 156 battery storage facilities -- are proposed to enhance grid resiliency and decarbonization across all regions of New York State.
"Despite federal uncertainties surrounding renewable energy, the Power Authority remains laser-focused on building a diverse portfolio of emission-free power generation," said Justin E. Driscoll, NYPA President and CEO. He emphasized urgency amid expiring tax credits and increased competition for labor and equipment.
A public comment period for the plan is now open through September 12, with virtual hearings scheduled for August 19 and 20. The initiative builds on momentum since the May 2023 expansion of NYPA's authority by Governor Kathy Hochul, which enabled ownership and development of large-scale renewables.
As part of that growth, NYPA launched a new development subsidiary -- the New York Renewable Energy Development Holdings Corporation -- and completed the acquisition of its first solar project, the 20 MW Somers Solar in Washington County.
An active Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is also underway to onboard more developers and investors, open through September 30.
