Philippsburg Converter Station Paves the Way for German Energy Transition

The inauguration of the Philippsburg Converter Station marks a significant step forward in the Ultranet HVDC project, designed to enhance Germany's power transmission network. This state-of-the-art facility was developed by Siemens Energy in collaboration with TransnetBW GmbH and its partners, including Firmengruppe Max Bögl and the SEAR Group.

Currently operating in Statcom mode, the station will ensure grid stability until the full HVDC transmission line from the North Sea is completed in 2027. This infrastructure is critical to Germany's Energiewende goal of reaching 80% renewable energy by 2030.

The converter station incorporates advanced HVDC technology, promoting sustainability by enabling a higher share of renewables in the energy mix while enhancing grid connectivity and reliability.

Project leaders including Hauke Jürgensen, Rolf Schneider, and others highlighted the importance of partnerships and teamwork in achieving this milestone.
