President of Indonesia Unveils Southeast Asia’s Largest Floating Solar Plant, Powered by Masdar
In a landmark moment for clean energy in Southeast Asia, Masdar, the UAE's leading clean energy company, and Indonesia's state-owned utility, PLN, have officially inaugurated the Cirata floating solar plant in Indonesia. The 145 MW (192 MWp) facility, situated on the Cirata Reservoir in West Java, was unveiled by HE Joko Widodo, the President of Indonesia.
This initiative marks Masdar's first floating solar PV project and is set to power 50,000 homes while offsetting a substantial 214,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
The collaboration between Masdar and PLN NP doesn't stop here. Plans for Phase II have already been set in motion to further develop Cirata, with an additional capacity of up to 500 MW. This ambitious expansion follows regulatory developments that increased the portion of water available for renewable energy uses to 20%, enabling the potential development of approximately 1.2 GW peak.
The Cirata project aligns with Indonesia's commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2060 and its pledge to a 29% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This groundbreaking initiative demonstrates the strength of the partnership between Masdar and Indonesia, contributing to the nation's ambitious goal of a cleaner, greener future.
