Prysmian Completes Sofia Offshore Wind Project Set to Power 1.2 Million UK Homes

Prysmian has completed its cable installation work for RWE's Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, a major renewable energy project in the North Sea that is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.2 million UK homes.

Located on Dogger Bank, around 195 kilometres from the nearest landfall, the Sofia project is one of the world's largest offshore wind developments. The wind farm comprises 100 turbines and will have a generation capacity of up to 1.4 gigawatts (GW).

Under a contract awarded in 2021, Prysmian was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the project's transmission cable infrastructure. The company said it installed more than 450 kilometres of high-voltage cables onshore and offshore using its Leonardo Da Vinci cable-laying vessel.

The project also incorporates P-Laser, a recyclable cable insulation technology developed by Prysmian for land-based cable sections.

Commenting on the milestone, Alessandro Panico, Chief Commercial Officer for Transmission at Prysmian, said the project demonstrates the importance of bringing additional clean energy capacity online to support energy security and the transition to renewable power.

The completion of the cable infrastructure marks a significant step forward for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, which is expected to play an important role in expanding the UK's renewable energy generation capacity.
