Romania Boosts Grid Storage as Hidroelectrica Invests USD 65.53M
Hidroelectrica has awarded a contract worth approximately $65.5 million (RON 296.8 million) for the Iron Gates II BESS project in Romania. The facility will have 64 MW of installed power and 434.76 MWh of storage capacity, making it the largest battery energy storage system in Hidroelectrica’s portfolio.
The project is intended to optimize electricity production over a 24-hour period by shifting energy toward higher-value periods and increasing the flexibility of the company’s generation portfolio. It will also support the integration and management of renewable generation in response to system and market conditions.
“For Hidroelectrica, the energy transition means more than developing new generation capacities. It means building the infrastructure that allows us to efficiently harness renewable energy and respond flexibly to the needs of the National Power System,” said Iulius-Dan Plaveti, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
The project is receiving approximately $9.6 million (RON 43.4 million) through Romania’s Modernisation Fund for electricity storage investments.
