Siemens Gamesa technology goes full-circle at RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind power project

German North Sea - This is a significant step in advancing the sustainability of wind turbines to the next level.

Siemens Gamesa has announced that they are celebrating the delivery of green energy from the world's first turbine equipped with Siemens Gamesa's environmentally friendly blades. The first commercial installation of recyclable wind turbine technology recently took place at RWE's Kaskasi offshore wind power project in Germany. It should mark a turning point in the long-term sustainability of offshore wind power.

According to Siemens Gamesa, wind turbine blades are made up of a combination of materials embedded in resin to form a strong, stiff structure. Utilizing Siemens Gamesa's technology enables full reclaim of the blade's components at the end of the product's lifespan. 

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO Wind Offshore, RWE Renewables: "That we are testing in our offshore wind farm Kaskasi the world's first recyclable wind turbine blades under operational conditions is a significant step in advancing the sustainability of wind turbines to the next level."

According to the company, the project is located 35 km (21.7 mi) north of the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea. It should be comprised of 38 wind turbines, generating 342 MW of clean, renewable energy for up to 400,000 German households.
