TotalEnergies Launches Africa’s Largest Hybrid Renewable Energy Project
TotalEnergies has commissioned the Hydra project, described as Africa's largest hybrid renewable energy project, in South Africa's Northern Cape province.
Developed by a consortium comprising TotalEnergies, Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, the project combines a 216 MW solar photovoltaic plant with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system. The integrated battery storage allows electricity generated during daylight hours to be supplied after sunset, helping improve grid reliability.
Under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, the facility is expected to generate more than 400 GWh of electricity annually, enough to supply approximately 200,000 households. The project will provide up to 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity between 5:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
"This project reinforces our renewable production capacity in South Africa, the continent's largest power market in terms of electricity consumption," said Magali Pailhé, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Southern Africa.
She added that the project "will strengthen South Africa's energy security while supporting efforts to decarbonise electricity generation."
The Hydra project forms part of South Africa's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), which was introduced to attract private investment aimed at addressing electricity shortages and improving grid resilience.
The commissioning reflects the growing role of large-scale battery storage alongside renewable generation as African countries continue investing in more reliable and sustainable electricity infrastructure.
