U.S. Achieves Solar Milestone with Over Five Million Installations

The United States has reached a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, surpassing five million solar installations, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). This achievement comes just eight years after the country celebrated its one-millionth installation in 2016, marking a rapid acceleration in solar adoption. The first grid-connected solar installation in the U.S. came online in 1973, making the journey to the first million installations a 40-year endeavor.

Residential solar systems dominate this growth, accounting for 97 percent of the total installations. Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center, emphasized the potential for further expansion, stating, "Every sunny roof without solar panels is a missed opportunity." This sentiment underscores the untapped potential of solar energy in the United States, particularly in residential areas.

The recent surge in solar installations is largely attributed to policy initiatives and economic incentives. More than half of the installations have been completed since the beginning of 2020, with over 25 percent installed following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act just 20 months ago.
