UK Reopens Auction for Abandoned Morgan Offshore Wind Site

The Crown Estate has reopened the auction for the Morgan offshore wind site after its previous developers, JERA Nex bp and EnBW, withdrew from the project following its failure to secure a contract in the UK's latest Contracts for Difference (CfD) allocation round. The accelerated leasing process is intended to identify a new developer and return the project to the UK's offshore wind pipeline.

The Morgan site, located in the Irish Sea, has the potential to support an offshore wind project of approximately 1.5 GW. The previous development consortium abandoned the lease after the project did not receive a government-backed power contract, prompting the Crown Estate to reclaim the seabed rights and relaunch the opportunity through a competitive auction.

According to the Crown Estate, the new auction process is designed to accelerate the site's redevelopment by shortening the timetable for selecting a new leaseholder. The approach aims to minimise delays to future offshore wind deployment while maintaining progress toward the UK's renewable energy and energy security objectives.

The relaunch follows the UK's recent offshore wind auction, which secured a record 8.4 GW of new capacity under the AR7 Contracts for Difference round. While the Morgan project was not among the successful bidders under its previous ownership, the reopened auction gives developers another opportunity to advance one of the UK's larger undeveloped offshore wind sites.
