WEG, Petrobras, and Statkraft Commission Largest Onshore Wind Turbine in the Americas
WEG, Petrobras, and Statkraft have brought into operation the largest onshore wind turbine in the Americas at the Brotas de Macaúbas Complex in Bahia, Brazil. The turbine, built by WEG, has an installed capacity of 7 MW and is expected to generate around 2,500 MWh per month, enough to power approximately 15,000 Brazilian homes annually.
The project, part of a modernization of the Seabra Wind Farm, received BRL 130 million ($26 million) in investment from Petrobras through the R&D clause of ANP oil and gas concession contracts. Additional financing came from BNDES and support from Brazil's Ministry of the Environment.
Officials from all three companies emphasized the project's significance for innovation and energy transition. Angélica Laureano, Petrobras' Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability, noted the turbine strengthens knowledge for future renewable projects. João Paulo Gualberto da Silva, Managing Director of WEG Energia, highlighted it as a technological milestone demonstrating WEG's innovation in wind energy.
The new turbine enhances efficiency and productivity, taking advantage of the region's favorable wind conditions. Its larger capacity reduces the number of turbines required per area, optimizing land use and lowering overall installation and maintenance costs.
Thiago Tomazzoli, CEO of Statkraft, said the collaboration reinforces operational efficiency, contributes to a cleaner energy matrix, and sets a new benchmark for Brazil's wind sector.
