Energy Vault Breaks Ground on 200MW Battery Storage Project in New South Wales

25 Feb 2025
Energy Vault has officially commenced construction on a 200MW/2-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) for ACEN Australia at the New England Solar project, located near Uralla in New South Wales. The deployment, which will be the first large-scale BESS in the region, is designed to store renewable energy and discharge it during peak demand hours to help reduce reliance on coal-fired power generation.

This milestone project is the first large-scale battery storage system to begin construction with backing from the NSW Government's Emerging Energy Program. The system will provide much-needed grid support, especially during high consumption periods, by dispatching stored renewable energy at critical times.

Lucas Sadler, Energy Vault's Vice President of Sales (Asia), emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "Today's groundbreaking is a significant milestone for Energy Vault's rapidly growing commercial footprint in Australia, and we're very pleased to be working with ACEN Australia, its First Nations partners, and the Uralla community on the project."

The BESS will incorporate Energy Vault's B-VAULT suite, a fully integrated energy storage solution with advanced grid support capabilities such as voltage and frequency ride-through, grid support during disturbances, and reactive power control. This system will be managed by Energy Vault's proprietary Vault-OS Energy Management System for optimal performance.

The New England Solar project will play a crucial role in providing renewable energy to the New South Wales region, contributing to Australia's push for reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
