Entergy’s New Power Plant in Texas Offers a Peek Into the Future of Clean Energy

2 May 2023

Port Arthur, TX - Entergy, an electricity producer in Texas, is building a power station that runs on hydrogen, which produces no greenhouse gas emissions.

The $1.5 billion project in Texas, called the Orange County Advanced Power Station, is the most advanced power station in Entergy's fleet. It has turbines that can run on both gas and hydrogen. While hydrogen power is still not a proven solution for large-scale deployment, it may become imperative for many energy companies, especially if new power plant rules, expected to be unveiled by the Biden administration, play a critical role in the US meeting its promises to cut carbon emissions.

Despite the potential of hydrogen and other clean technologies, the US electricity generation industry still faces technological and political challenges as it transforms. Hydrogen power and carbon capture technologies are still developing, and the infrastructure needs for both are massive. However, some power companies are trying to get ahead of new emissions limits by investing in these technologies. Both hydrogen and carbon capture have environmental implications depending on how they are produced, stored and transported. However, these technologies are becoming more viable, and it seems that hydrogen has a role to play in a low-carbon future.
