Estonia Launches Largest Solar-Plus-Storage Hybrid Plant
Mirova and Evecon’s Baltic Renewable Energy Platform (BREP) have launched Estonia’s largest solar-plus-storage hybrid project at the 77.5MWp Kirikmäe site. The plant is being enhanced with a 55MW/250MWh battery system, currently under construction by WiSo Engineering using equipment supplied by Huawei.
The hybrid facility is expected to begin operations in Q3–Q4 2026 and will provide grid-stability services, including FCR, aFRR, and mFRR. This marks the first flexibility and power purchase agreement (FPPA) in the Baltics, covering output from BREP’s Kirikmäe, Imavere, and Lohu Mets sites.
Swedbank has committed $100 million to refinance the solar portfolio, construct the Kirikmäe battery, and provide ancillary credit lines.
Raphaël Lance, global head of private assets at Mirova, said the project illustrates how hybrid plants can accelerate the integration of renewables and storage into European power systems. Karl-Joonatan Kvell, CEO of Evecon, highlighted the role of innovative structures and partnerships in shaping Estonia’s electricity system. Servet Akgün, founder of Pure Energy, described the FPPA as a milestone for long-term renewable collaboration in the Baltics.
The Kirikmäe project represents a significant step in the region’s transition to hybrid renewable energy solutions, combining solar generation with large-scale energy storage to improve grid reliability and support clean energy growth.
