Eternal Power Plans Major Hydrogen Plant in Germany
Eternal Power, a Hamburg-based scale-up, is set to construct one of Europe's largest production facilities for green hydrogen in Dummerstorf, near Rostock. The plant will feature a planned capacity of 80 megawatts and aims to produce 8,000 tons of green hydrogen annually starting in 2028. Furthermore, an expansion to 400 megawatts is already in the planning stages.
The facility will occupy a five-hectare site, and Eternal Power has secured purchase agreements worth €2.3 billion for the hydrogen produced. The green hydrogen generated will primarily cater to energy-intensive sectors such as shipping, aviation, and the chemical and steel industries.
Andreas Rimkus, Hydrogen Commissioner of the SPD parliamentary group, highlighted the project's importance for Germany's energy transition, stating that green hydrogen is crucial for the sustainable development of energy-intensive industries. The German government also recognizes the significance of hydrogen, having approved €500 million in funding for hydrogen projects in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in July 2024.
Dummerstorf was selected for the plant due to its proximity to offshore wind farms and its connection to the high-voltage grid, which offers favorable conditions for green hydrogen production. Robert Meitz, co-founder and COO of Eternal Power, noted that the location combines all essential prerequisites, including renewable energy sources and logistical connections.
To enhance efficiency, Eternal Power plans to implement a software solution to optimize electricity procurement, ensuring the electrolysis plant operates at high utilization rates and low costs. With the expansion to 400 megawatts projected by 2030, the necessary infrastructure improvements are already being planned by grid operator 50Hertz.
