The European Commission and the Republic of Moldova have agreed on a two-year Comprehensive Strategy for Energy Independence and Resilience, aimed at reducing Moldova's dependence on Russian energy and integrating it into the EU energy market.

The strategy includes €250 million in support for Moldova in 2025, with €100 million from the EU to be delivered by mid-April. Additionally, €60 million is allocated to assist people in the Transnistrian region, contingent on improvements in fundamental freedoms and human rights.

In the short term, the package will mitigate rising energy costs by compensating excess electricity expenses for households consuming up to 110 kWh per month until the end of 2025. It also includes a hardship fund for vulnerable households and full compensation for social institutions like schools and hospitals. Businesses in agriculture and manufacturing will receive €15 million in energy bill support, while €50 million will be available for energy efficiency investments.

The long-term goal is to phase out Russian energy reliance through investments and reforms, enhancing Moldova's energy resilience. The strategy aligns with the Moldova Growth Plan, expected to provide an economic boost and support Moldova's EU accession.

This initiative follows past EU support, including €240 million from 2021-2024 for Moldova's energy sector and integration into the European electricity network.
