Eversource Proposes Cutting-Edge Smart Meters for Real-Time Power Insights and Cost Savings

6 Nov 2023

Eversource, a prominent utility provider, is pushing for the installation of Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) in Connecticut. These innovative meters will offer real-time information about power consumption and provide "billing alerts" to assist consumers in reducing energy costs.

The AMI technology will not only enable faster dispatching of crews during power outages but also ensure customers receive timely updates about restoration efforts, enhancing overall service reliability.

Eversource's request for AMI technology adoption is under review by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), with a decision expected on November 9, 2023. In Massachusetts, Eversource has already received approval for these new meters and is progressing with procurement and planning.

The project, estimated to cost $700 million, will facilitate system efficiency and greater reliability, ultimately leading to savings for customers. The company anticipates a gradual monthly bill increase of around $1, reaching a maximum of $6 per month upon full deployment, and then decreasing steadily as costs are recouped.

AMI meters will offer customers insights into their energy usage in 15-minute increments, allowing for more informed decision-making and potential cost reductions. Additionally, customers can set alerts for bill amounts or power usage thresholds to better manage their energy consumption.

Eversource assures that the new meters prioritize cybersecurity and offer enhanced protection against cyber threats, addressing concerns raised in other regions where AMI systems have been deployed.
