Federal ministers visit Elia’s offshore switching platform

10 Oct 2022

BELGIUM - Elia plans to build Princess Elisabeth Island, the world's first artificial energy island.

Elia has announced that federal ministers Tinne Van der Straeten (Energy) and Vincent Van Quickenborne (North Sea) visited the MOG, Elia's 'plug at sea'. The MOG is an offshore switching platform that bundles the energy generated by four wind farms together, after which this energy is transported to the Belgian mainland.

According to Elia, 2.2 GW of wind energy capacity currently exists in the Belgian part of the North Sea. The Government plans to triple that capacity by 2030 and quadruple it by 2040. Elia is ready to meet those targets and plans to build Princess Elisabeth Island, the world's first artificial energy island.
