Finland’s Winda Energy Launches First Grid-Scale Battery Project

13 Aug 2025
Winda Energy, a Finnish renewable energy developer, has announced its entry into the energy storage market with a new 30MW/60MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Rautavaara, Finland.

The project, developed in partnership with Czech energy technology firm Second Foundation, marks Winda Energy's first large-scale BESS installation and supports its broader portfolio of over 30 wind and solar power projects across Finland.

According to Tuomas Hooli, CEO of Winda Energy, the project is a strategic move aimed at enhancing grid stability, integrating renewables more efficiently, and reducing price volatility in the energy market. "The Rautavaara project opens the door for Winda to the growing energy storage market, which is one of the cornerstones of Finland's clean transition," said Hooli.

Construction is set to begin in autumn 2025, with commercial operations expected by 2026. The BESS will play a vital role in balancing supply and demand and enabling greater grid flexibility.

The battery systems will be supplied by German-Czech firm Gaz Energy, while Ingeteam, a Spanish manufacturer, will provide the inverter technology--underscoring the pan-European collaboration behind the initiative.

Finland continues to expand its clean energy infrastructure as it works toward carbon neutrality, and this project positions Winda Energy as a new player in the utility-scale storage space.
