FortisBC Energy Inc. has announced an agreement with VulcanX Energy Corp. to advance hydrogen pyrolysis technology, a process that produces zero-emission hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas at a low cost. This collaboration is part of FortisBC's broader strategy to support British Columbia's CleanBC initiative and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The agreement includes funding from FortisBC's Clean Growth Innovation Fund, aimed at supporting the development and potential commercialization of VulcanX's proprietary technology. This technology, developed by VulcanX, a spin-out from MéridaLabs at the University of British Columbia, is currently being tested at a demonstration facility in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The goal is to scale the technology to produce up to one tonne of hydrogen per day.

Joe Mazza, Vice President of Energy Supply and Resource Development at FortisBC, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in creating a low-carbon future for British Columbia. Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation, praised the collaboration, highlighting its role in reducing emissions and contributing to a sustainable environment.

Dr. Omar E. Herrera, CEO of VulcanX, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that technological innovation is key to meeting emission reduction targets economically.
