Freyr Battery Expands Into Solar Manufacturing with $340M Acquisition of TrinaSolar Plant

8 Nov 2024
Freyr Battery announced it will acquire Trina Solar's 5 GW solar module manufacturing facility in Wilmer, Texas, marking its entry into the U.S. solar manufacturing industry. The $340 million deal is expected to close by year-end, adding a 1.35 million-square-foot production plant to Freyr's portfolio, which began manufacturing modules earlier this month.

The facility is expected to reach full production capacity in 2025, with Freyr noting that approximately 30% of its projected output is already secured by U.S. customers through firm offtake contracts. Freyr CEO Daniel Barcelo stated that strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities for solar and batteries is critical for "energy transition and job creation."

Alongside the acquisition, Freyr revealed plans to build a second 5 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in the U.S., with construction set to begin in Q2 2025 and initial production targeted for late 2026. This move aligns with industry calls for a complete domestic solar supply chain to reduce reliance on imports from China.

Once the acquisition is finalized, Mingxing Lin, Trina Solar's Head of Overseas Finance Center, will join Freyr as Chief Strategy Officer and board member. Dave Gustafson, Trina's Co-General Manager, will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer.
