G&W Electric Launches Integrated Voltage Sensor for Smarter Grid Operations
G&W Electric has introduced the Accusense® VS-27-UG, a fully integrated voltage sensor designed for underground distribution systems. Engineered for precise, real-time monitoring, the sensor helps utilities improve operational efficiency, fault detection, and support long-term grid modernization.
Offered as a factory-tested, pre-integrated solution with G&W Electric switchgear, the VS-27-UG simplifies field installation and is retrofit-ready for both new and existing infrastructure.
Key technical features include:
-
0.5% measurement accuracy for fault detection and predictive diagnostics
-
Active sensor technology that ensures performance regardless of cable length, relay, or meter burden
-
Reduced footprint compared to solid insulated potential transformers (PTs)
-
Open-back configuration for hi-pot testing and easier maintenance
-
Wide temperature tolerance for accuracy in variable conditions
-
IP68 rating (IEC 60529), tested for 20 feet submersion over 20 days
"Accurate, real-time data is the foundation of grid digitalization," said John Mueller, chairman and owner of G&W Electric. "We've used the Accusense VS-27-UG voltage sensor side-by-side with a competitive sensor in our own microgrid, and the results speak for themselves. The G&W Electric sensor outperformed the competition in both accuracy and reliability."
The sensor's advanced design supports long-term utility goals by improving power quality, enabling early fault detection, identifying grid stability issues from DERs, and optimizing system efficiency. It also lays the foundation for future initiatives such as automation and self-healing networks.
The VS-27-UG complies with IEC 60044-7, IEEE 386, and IEEE C37.92 standards. Environmental testing simulating over 20 years of field use validated its long-term accuracy and durability.
