GE Vernova’s Nuclear Division Signs MoUs to Advance SMR Technology in the UK

11 Sep 2024
GE Vernova's nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has signed a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Aecon, AtkinsRealis, Jacobs, and Laing O'Rourke. These agreements aim to facilitate the potential deployment of GEH's BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the UK. The MoUs align with Great British Nuclear's ongoing SMR competition, which is key to the UK's clean energy strategy.

The collaborations leverage experience from similar projects, including the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Canada, where construction is set to begin in 2025. Through these partnerships, GEH aims to enhance its UK operations by utilizing lessons learned from the Darlington project and expertise from UK-based partners.

Andy Champ, GEH UK Country Leader, highlighted the importance of these strategic relationships in supporting the UK's clean energy goals. Thomas Clochard, Executive Vice President at Aecon, and Joe St Julian, President of Nuclear at AtkinsRealis, emphasized the significance of their collaboration in advancing next-generation nuclear infrastructure.

These MoUs build on GEH's existing partnership with Sheffield Forgemasters and follow a £33.6 million grant from the UK's Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF) to support the BWRX-300's deployment.
