Georgia Power Approves Largest Distributed Solar Procurement
Georgia Power has awarded contracts for 16 new distributed generation (DG) solar projects, totaling 70 megawatts (MW), marking the largest DG solar procurement in the company’s history. Combined with 12 projects completed in 2024 adding 41 MW, the total new DG solar capacity exceeds 110 MW.
The projects, approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), are part of Georgia Power’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan, designed to expand renewable energy while maintaining reliability and affordable electricity for customers.
The company’s DG request for proposals allows developers to commit to long-term power purchase agreements for projects ranging from 250 kilowatts (kW) to 6 MW. Third-party developers build and operate the solar facilities, with Georgia Power purchasing all of the energy produced.
Additional distributed generation RFPs totaling over 100 MW are planned for 2026 and 2027, with projects expected to be online by 2028. Georgia Power currently operates more than 4,900 MW of renewable resources, with 5,100 MW under development, aiming for a total of 10,000 MW by 2032.
The company also offers programs for residential and business customers to participate in solar energy, including community solar subscriptions and voluntary solar programs.
