Georgia Power Energizes New 65-MW Battery Storage Facility
Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), has energized its 65-MW/260-MWh Mossy Branch Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), aimed at enhancing grid resilience across Georgia. The newly operational facility, located near Columbus in Talbot County, will provide four hours of storage capacity and operate as a standalone unit connected directly to the electric transmission grid.
The Mossy Branch project, part of Georgia Power's 2019 integrated resource plan (IRP), received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission in 2021. The system was developed in collaboration with Finnish technology provider Wartsila Corp (HEL: WRT1V), which served as both the technology provider and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the site.
In addition to the Mossy Branch facility, Georgia Power is advancing a larger 265-MW battery storage initiative in Cherokee County, scheduled for completion by late 2026. This project is part of the utility's broader efforts to enhance grid stability, with an additional four battery energy storage systems totaling 500 MW also planned for development in Georgia.
