German Energy Operators and Industrial Giants to Develop Groundbreaking HVDC Technology

23 Jul 2024
Germany is set to advance its energy transition with a pioneering initiative involving 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, and TransnetBW, alongside industrial leaders Siemens Energy, GE Vernova, and Hitachi Energy. The partners are collaborating on a project to develop multiterminal hubs equipped with direct current (DC) circuit breakers. This technology aims to enhance the efficiency of integrating up to 70 gigawatts of offshore wind power into the grid.

The proposed multiterminal hubs will create extra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) networks that link various direct current lines, enabling more flexible energy distribution and bolstering the stability of Europe's power grid. This innovation is expected to reduce the need for new infrastructure, minimize environmental impact, and help stabilize energy costs.

Tim Meyerjürgens, COO of TenneT, emphasized that the project represents a crucial step towards a climate-neutral energy grid, while Stefan Kapferer, Managing Director of 50Hertz, highlighted the importance of establishing a European standard for smart power hubs.

The initiative will feature the use of advanced DC circuit breakers capable of rapidly isolating faults, showcasing both the technical and economic viability of this technology. The project aims to demonstrate how multiterminal HVDC systems can effectively support renewable energy integration and grid stability.
