Germany’s Largest Floating Solar System Launched in Bad Schönborn

22 Oct 2024
The largest floating photovoltaic system in Germany has been inaugurated on October 21, 2024 in Bad Schönborn, located northwest of Stuttgart. Installed by Nexentury, the solar system features more than 27,000 solar modules covering over eight hectares on the Philippsee, an artificial lake formed from a gravel pit.

With a maximum output of 15 megawatts, the system has been operational since August 1 and supplies power to the gravel plant, with surplus electricity feeding into the public grid. The project aims to generate approximately 16 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually.

Planned since 2021, construction of the system began in February 2024. Winfried Kretschmann, Premier of Baden-Württemberg, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of utilizing all available resources, including floating photovoltaic systems, for the energy transition. He assured that the state would continue to support such projects.

This is the third floating solar project in the state, with flooded gravel pits being considered ideal locations due to their high energy demands and minimal land use disruption.
