GIZ, TERI, and GUVNL Partner to Pilot Battery Storage for Renewable Energy in Gujarat, India

21 Aug 2025
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) have signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India (StoREin) project. The collaboration aims to test the technical and commercial viability of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within Gujarat's power distribution network and develop policy recommendations for broader adoption across India.

The StoREin project is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), in cooperation with India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). TERI and partners including Fraunhofer IEE, IIT Bombay, and WRI India will support through research, demonstration, and policy work.

Gujarat leads India in renewable energy capacity additions and rooftop solar installations. To address renewable intermittency, GUVNL is preparing utility-scale energy storage tenders and plans pilot projects based on detailed feasibility studies conducted under this partnership.

Mr. Bernhard Voelcker, Head of the StoREin Project-GIZ India, stressed the need for practical demonstrations to prove energy storage's financial viability. Mr. Alekhya Datta, Fellow & Director at TERI, highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships for a clean power sector. Mr. Sourav Nandy, GM, F&A at GUVNL, said the collaboration will be key to Gujarat's green energy transition and a model for India's renewable integration and grid resilience.
