The OpenADR Alliance announced record global growth, adding nearly 60 new members over the past year as energy providers and technology developers respond to the rapid rise of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as EV charging, battery storage, and renewable integration.
The nonprofit alliance, which promotes the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) standard, now includes a diverse membership of utilities, startups, and manufacturers from Asia, Europe, and North America. Growth is particularly strong in Asia, with over one-third of new members coming from Japan, China, and Korea.
Rolf Bienert, Managing & Technical Director of the OpenADR Alliance, said the surge reflects industry efforts to manage grid flexibility and optimize demand response across emerging technologies like virtual power plants (VPPs) and grid-interactive buildings.
The alliance recently released OpenADR 3.1.0, adding MQTT support for IoT-based communications, and announced collaboration with Matter to extend interoperability into consumer smart devices. There are now 335 certified OpenADR products and more than 5,000 organizations have downloaded the specification.
New members this year include Ennowell, Edo, Shadow Power, LOXONE, and DynaChrge Inc., as well as major U.S. water heater brands such as A. O. Smith, Rheem, and LG Electronics.
Governments across Europe, the U.S., and Japan are increasingly specifying OpenADR as part of national standards for energy flexibility and grid demand management.
