Global Switch Signs Wind PPA with RWE for London AI Data Centre

23 Jan 2026
Global Switch has signed an eight-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with RWE to supply wind-generated electricity to its London Docklands data centre. The agreement covers output from RWE’s Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in south-west Wales, which entered service in 2018 with 28 turbines and a 57.4 MW capacity.

Under the deal, RWE will supply approximately 70 GWh of electricity per year from January 2026 through 2033. The agreement forms part of Global Switch’s target to procure 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer of RWE Supply & Trading, highlighted the role of renewable power in supporting rising electricity demand from AI and digital services, noting that Global Switch joins other data centre operators relying on low-carbon electricity.

Peter Domeney, Chief Operating Officer of Global Switch, described the agreement as a “critical next step” in creating environmentally conscious data centres and linking Welsh wind generation to high-performance AI computing in London. The Docklands site is also being expanded and densified to meet growing AI-related compute demand and hosts deployments of Nvidia H100 and H200 GPUs, as well as liquid cooling showcases.

Global Switch is targeting a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 across European sites and has set emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative in 2025. The company’s sites are also part of the European Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres initiative.

RWE emphasized that its renewable generation, battery storage, and flexible power portfolio positions it to meet rising electricity demand tied to AI and electrification. PPAs like this are increasingly used by data centres to secure long-term renewable supply amid growing power needs.
