GM and Samsung Confirm $3.5 Billion EV Battery Plant for Indiana

29 Aug 2024

General Motors and Samsung SDI have reaffirmed their joint commitment to a $3.5 billion EV battery plant near New Carlisle, Indiana, with a new target for production set for 2027. The original plan projected production to begin a year earlier, but the timeline was pushed back following changes in project partnerships and broader challenges in the electric vehicle market.

The project, located on a 680-acre site between New Carlisle and South Bend, is expected to see site preparation work throughout 2024, with significant construction scheduled for 2025 and 2026. Jeff Rea, president and CEO of the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce, expressed confidence in the project's continued progress, although he noted that factors like EV market demand and the 2024 presidential election could influence its timeline.

The battery plant is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs when fully operational, playing a crucial role in the broader EV ecosystem despite recent slowdowns in electric vehicle sales.
