Google, Kairos Power, and TVA Team Up to Launch Advanced Nuclear Plant in Tennessee
Google, Kairos Power, and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced a collaboration to support America's growing energy demand and advance advanced nuclear energy. Under a power purchase agreement (PPA), Kairos Power's Hermes 2 advanced nuclear plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will deliver up to 50 megawatts (MW) of reliable, 24/7 clean energy to the TVA grid, which powers Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama.
This agreement marks TVA as the first U.S. utility to purchase electricity from a Generation IV advanced reactor. The Hermes 2 plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2030, with output increased from 28 MW to 50 MW to meet demand.
The collaboration supports Google's commitment to decarbonizing its data centers and expanding clean energy in the region. It also reinforces TVA's focus on integrating innovative, firm energy sources.
M ike Laufer, CEO of Kairos Power, highlighted the importance of the partnership for commercializing advanced nuclear technology and accelerating the energy transition. Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Center Energy at Google, emphasized the role of such technologies in powering the future digital economy.
The initiative is backed by strong local and national support, including statements from government officials recognizing the project's significance for energy security, economic growth, and U.S. leadership in nuclear innovation.
