Google has launched a $20 billion renewable energy initiative to support its growing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, the company announced on Tuesday. In collaboration with renewable energy developer Intersect Power and investment fund TPG Rise Climate, Google plans to construct gigawatts of carbon-free energy projects, including solar, wind, and battery storage, alongside essential grid upgrades.

The partnership also includes an $800 million equity investment in Intersect Power, with contributions from TPG, CAI, Google, and Greenbelt Capital Partners. The first project in this ambitious undertaking is already being financed and aims to link data centers with renewable power parks at shared grid points, ensuring efficient energy delivery and faster project completion.

The phased rollout will see initial operations by 2026 and full completion by 2027. Each data center will pair with an equivalent capacity of renewable energy, ensuring the infrastructure can handle the growing demands of AI technologies.

The initiative comes as the U.S. faces grid congestion, with nearly 12,000 interconnection requests representing over 2 terawatts of capacity awaiting approval. This challenge has underscored the urgency for tech giants to invest in renewable energy solutions.

Google's approach, which accelerates deployment timelines compared to nuclear alternatives, could set a precedent for meeting AI-driven energy demands while reducing carbon emissions.
