Google Signs 21-year Renewable Energy PPA with TotalEnergies for Malaysian Data Centers
Google and TotalEnergies have signed a 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply renewable electricity to Google’s data centers in Malaysia, covering a total of 1 TWh of certified clean energy.
Under the agreement, TotalEnergies will provide power from the Citra Energies solar plant in Kedah, a project developed alongside local partner MK Land. The plant was awarded in August 2023 as part of Malaysia’s Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP), which enables companies to meet sustainability targets through virtual PPAs and contributes additional solar capacity to the national grid.
The deal builds on a recent collaboration in the United States, where Google and TotalEnergies signed a 15-year PPA for 1.5 TWh of renewable electricity from a solar farm in Ohio.
Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, said the agreement highlights the company’s ability to provide competitive clean energy solutions in both mature and emerging markets.
Giorgio Fortunato, Head of Clean Energy & Power, Asia Pacific at Google, emphasized that the partnership supports Google’s 2030 targets for net zero emissions and its 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) ambition, while also fostering local growth of Malaysia’s electricity system.
Since 2010, Google has signed more than 170 agreements to purchase over 22 GW of clean energy, reporting a 12% reduction in data center carbon emissions in 2024 despite growing energy demand.
