Ameren Energizes First Gas-Insulated Substation in Illinois

Ameren has commissioned its first gas-insulated substation (GIS) on its Illinois transmission system, marking a significant step in the utility's grid modernization efforts. The Goalby Substation in Belleville was designed to improve reliability and operational flexibility while overcoming challenging site conditions caused by historic underground coal mining.

Unlike conventional air-insulated substations, the GIS facility uses enclosed, gas-insulated equipment that enables the same transmission functionality on approximately one-third of the footprint of a traditional substation. Ameren selected the compact design to reduce the amount of mine mitigation and site preparation required, helping lower construction complexity and costs while maintaining reliability standards.

The substation was energized in late 2025 following construction and underground stabilization work. According to Ameren, the project strengthens the transmission network serving the Belleville area, improving service reliability and supporting faster restoration during outages. The utility also incorporated monitoring systems to enhance operational safety and equipment performance within the GIS installation.

Beyond the Goalby project, Ameren continues to advance multiple transmission and substation investments across Illinois as part of broader efforts to improve grid resilience, accommodate economic growth, and support future electricity demand. The utility is evaluating additional applications for GIS technology, particularly in areas where land constraints, environmental considerations, or difficult ground conditions make traditional substation designs less practical.
