GE Vernova Launches HVDC Competence Centre to Boost European Energy Infrastructure

GE Vernova has launched a new HVDC (high-voltage direct current) Competence Centre in Berlin, marking a significant expansion of the company's European electrification initiatives. The centre aims to position Berlin as a strategic hub for advancing HVDC technology to meet the evolving demands of global power transmission.

 

The new facility, part of an expanded Berlin electrification complex, is designed to support the development and testing of advanced HVDC solutions. The technology is essential for efficiently transmitting bulk electricity over long distances, especially from offshore renewable sources. Key goals include improving HVDC efficiency, integrating renewable energy into power grids, and enabling the connection of multiple HVDC links.

Philippe Piron, CEO of Electrification Systems at GE Vernova, underscored the importance of the centre, stating that "the world's future is electric, and electrification is essential for achieving a net-zero emissions future." He added that the Berlin site will serve as a core hub for innovation in grid solutions and renewable integration, supporting both Germany's energy transition and the decarbonisation of the global energy landscape.

Germany, a priority market for GE Vernova, is in the midst of a large-scale energy transition, with an ambitious goal of achieving 80% renewable energy generation by 2030. GE Vernova's collaboration with the German TSOs - 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, and TransnetBW - on multiterminal HVDC projects reflects this commitment to building sustainable grid infrastructure. The new centre is expected to create approximately 500 skilled jobs in Berlin, enhancing local expertise in HVDC and renewable energy systems.
