Georgia Power completes 198MWh battery storage project at Moody Air Force Base
Georgia Power has completed construction of its Moody Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 49.5MW/198MWh facility located alongside the existing solar installation adjacent to Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County, Georgia. The project is expected to enter commercial operation following final testing and commissioning.
The four-hour battery energy storage system is one of four utility-owned storage projects approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission as part of the company's broader energy storage expansion. By sharing existing transmission infrastructure with the nearby solar facility, the project avoids the need for new generator step-up substations and other transmission upgrades.
The Moody facility forms part of Georgia Power's 765MW portfolio of battery storage projects currently under development across the state. Other projects include the Robins, Hammond and McGrau Ford battery installations, which are scheduled to enter service through 2026.
According to the company, the battery system will store electricity for use during periods of higher demand, supporting grid reliability while increasing the use of existing renewable generation. The project was engineered and constructed by Crowder Industrial Construction.
The Moody project follows Georgia Power's first company-owned battery energy storage facility, the 65MW/260MWh Mossy Branch BESS, which entered commercial operation in late 2024.
