Hitachi Energy Awarded HVDC Converter Contracts for Major Scottish Subsea Links

SSEN Transmission has awarded Hitachi Energy major contracts to deliver high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for two new subsea cable links in the north of Scotland: the consented Spittal–Peterhead connection and the proposed Western Isles–mainland link.

The contracts cover the full scope of HVDC converter technology, including design, procurement, manufacturing, installation and commissioning. They build on Hitachi Energy being named preferred bidder in 2023 and appointed through a framework agreement aimed at accelerating delivery of the UK’s clean-energy infrastructure.

The Western Isles link is intended to enable renewable electricity generated on the islands to be exported to the mainland grid, while also improving system resilience. The Spittal–Peterhead link will create a strategic transmission corridor across northern Scotland, supporting wider power flows and energy security.

The projects form part of SSEN Transmission’s £22bn+ investment programme to upgrade the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. The company has also committed to delivering social and economic benefits through its participation in the Highland Social Value Charter, including local contracting, skills development, infrastructure investment and environmental enhancements.

According to Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Grid Integration at Hitachi Energy, the projects will help strengthen the UK transmission system and support the transition to a low-carbon energy system. Sandy Mactaggart, Director of Offshore Delivery at SSEN Transmission, said the links are critical to unlocking Scotland’s renewable energy potential.

Subject to remaining planning and marine approvals, both subsea links are expected to be energised by 2030.
