Hitachi Energy Expands Across Semiconductor and HVDC Infrastructure
Hitachi Energy announced two developments in June 2026 strengthening its role in power electronics and HVDC transmission.
In Switzerland, the company is expanding semiconductor production at its Lenzburg site. The investment is aimed at increasing output of advanced power semiconductor components used in high-voltage modules for applications including renewable integration, grid stability, and industrial electrification. The expansion responds to rising demand for power electronics in modern transmission and distribution systems.
Separately, Hitachi Energy has been awarded an approximately $875 million (€770 million) contract by Terna and STEG for the Elmed HVDC interconnection project. The link will connect Italy and Tunisia via a 220 km submarine cable with a capacity of 600 MW, including converter stations in Partanna (Italy) and Mlaabi (Tunisia).
The contract completes the procurement phase for the project, which is supported by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility. Elmed is intended to strengthen cross-border grid stability and enable renewable energy exchange across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
