KETRACO’s Innovations Aim to End Power Blackouts in Kenya

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) is on a mission to eliminate power blackouts in Kenya by introducing transportable power transformers, also known as mobile substations. Dr. (Eng.) John Mativo, the CEO of KETRACO, envisions a future where power interruptions are a thing of the past, and electricity can be quickly restored through the deployment of mobile transformers.

Mobile substations are versatile power distribution systems that can be rapidly relocated and set up, making them ideal for providing emergency power supply to areas where the main grid is unavailable or damaged.

KETRACO is also actively strengthening Kenya's power system through various projects aimed at enhancing capacity and reliability. One significant initiative is the Nairobi Ring project, which includes the construction of a 103 KM 400kV double circuit line, new substations, and increased transformation capacity. This project will not only bolster the power supply to the Nairobi Metropolitan region but also reduce the strain on existing overloaded substations.

In the era of digitalization, KETRACO is not falling behind. The company is developing an Asset Performance Management System (APMS) under the National System Control Centre Project, which will enable remote management of substations. This system is expected to improve maintenance, asset availability, and infrastructure lifespan, ultimately leading to a more stable and reliable power network in Kenya.

Dr. (Eng.) Mativo believes that embracing the latest technology and automation will not only reduce blackouts but also drive economic growth in Kenya by ensuring a consistent and sufficient supply of electricity.
