Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 3 Offshore Wind Farm Starts Operations
Borkum Riffgrund 3, a 913 MW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, has entered commercial operation, Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure said on August 31, 2026.
Located around 72 kilometres off Germany’s coast, the project comprises 83 turbines, each rated at 11 MW, and is now one of the country’s largest operational offshore wind farms.
The project has secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) covering 786 MW with Amazon, BASF, Covestro, REWE Group and Google. The agreements have terms ranging from 10 to 25 years.
“With Borkum Riffgrund 3 now operational, we’ve delivered a landmark project for Germany and European offshore wind while making further progress on our 8.1 GW construction portfolio,” said Patrick Harnett, Chief Construction Officer at Ørsted.
The project increases Ørsted’s operational offshore wind capacity in Germany to around 2.5 GW, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 2.5 million households.
Construction involved around 100 German companies, alongside suppliers and installation contractors from across Europe.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure and forms part of Ørsted’s wider 8.1 GW offshore wind construction programme.
