POWERCHINA Expands Egypt Wind Portfolio Beyond 1.8 GW
POWERCHINA is developing more than 1.8 GW of wind power in Egypt, strengthening the country’s renewable generation portfolio while expanding into energy storage and local manufacturing.
The portfolio includes the operational 500 MW Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project, alongside the 1.1 GW Gulf of Suez Wind Project and 202.5 MW Ras Ghareb Wind Project, both under construction.
For power systems stakeholders, the developments also highlight the growing role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Egypt’s energy transition. In August 2026, POWERCHINA began construction of a 50,000-square-metre energy storage manufacturing facility for Sungrow in Ain Sokhna. The facility is expected to become Sungrow’s first BESS manufacturing base in the Middle East and Africa.
POWERCHINA said its Egyptian projects are supporting local talent development and the development of a domestic clean-energy supply chain.
The company’s wind portfolio reflects Egypt’s accelerating investment in renewable generation and the infrastructure needed to integrate increasing volumes of variable power into the electricity system.
