Rhode Island Energy Adds 150 MW From Maine Wind Farm
Rhode Island Energy has conditionally selected 150 MW from a proposed 800 MW wind project in Aroostook County, Maine.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission selected Clearway Energy Group to develop the project and Avangrid, parent company of Central Maine Power, to build a 111-mile high-voltage transmission line connecting it to the New England grid.
Maine plans to purchase 600 MW for its customers, with the remaining capacity allocated to other New England states. Rhode Island’s 150 MW represents most of that remaining capacity.
Rhode Island Energy will negotiate a long-term power purchase agreement with Clearway, subject to approval by the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission. The project remains subject to permitting and development, and the Maine commission says construction of the wind generation depends on the transmission line being built first.
