Southwire Announces Major Expansion of Heflin, Alabama Operations

Southwire Company, LLC has announced a significant expansion of its Heflin, Alabama operations as part of its broader modernization strategy. The project will add approximately 340,000 square feet to the existing facility and is expected to create more than 85 new jobs in Cleburne County.

The Heflin Plant, originally opened in 1996 as Forte Power Systems, supports medium- and high-voltage cable production. This marks the plant’s fourth expansion, underscoring Southwire’s continued investment in core wire and cable manufacturing capabilities. The company, now in its 75th year, continues advancing its mission: We Deliver Power… Responsibly®.

Planned upgrades include enhanced medium-voltage cable production capacity, comfort cooling systems, and sustainability features such as a rainwater collection tank. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with new equipment and capacity coming online in late 2027.

Rich Stinson, Southwire’s President and CEO, said the expansion supports the company’s readiness for rising demand driven by the “re-electrification of America.” Governor Kay Ivey welcomed the investment, citing its importance to rural Alabama’s economic momentum. Norman Adkins, Southwire’s President and COO, emphasized the company’s ongoing $1.8 billion modernization program, while Ellen McNair, Alabama’s Secretary of Commerce, highlighted the project’s impact on local job creation.

Local leadership also praised the development, with David McLendon, Site Leader for the Heflin Plant, and Mayor Robby Brown noting the positive community impact and long-term partnership with Southwire.
