SWEPCO Receives $200M Texas Grant for Grid Upgrades
Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) has been awarded a $200 million grant through the Texas Energy Fund Outside ERCOT Grant Program to support major infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving grid reliability and affordability for customers in Texas.
The funding will be used to upgrade approximately 700 miles of powerline infrastructure and modernize nearly 200 electrical circuits across Northeast Texas. The project is expected to benefit more than 192,000 customers served by SWEPCO.
According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the investment reflects the state’s continued focus on strengthening energy infrastructure to support economic growth and population demand.
“Reliable electricity powers every part of Texans’ daily lives,” Greg Abbott said. “As our state grows, we will ensure families, businesses and communities have the reliable, affordable power they need. Through these investments to upgrade power line infrastructure, Texas will remain the energy capital of the world.”
The upgrade program includes replacing aging copper conductors with stronger aluminum alloy wiring and installing new utility poles. These improvements are intended to enhance system reliability, reduce outages, and improve resilience during severe weather events.
SWEPCO stated that the project will strengthen both operational performance and storm resilience across its service territory.
Completion of the infrastructure upgrades is expected by early 2031.
