Texas Grid Modernization Receives $3.26 Billion DOE Investment

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized a loan of up to $3.26 billion for AEP Texas to support a major expansion and modernization effort focused on strengthening the state’s electric grid.

The funding, provided through the DOE’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF), will help advance around 100 transmission projects across Texas. The initiative includes upgrading existing transmission infrastructure and developing new systems spanning approximately 2,800 miles.

The planned improvements are designed to increase grid capacity, enhance reliability, reduce service disruptions, and enable the integration of additional dependable power generation resources. According to the DOE, the investment could help lower electricity costs for Texas households and businesses by an estimated $685 million over the next three decades.

DOE Secretary Chris Wright said the project will play an important role in preparing Texas’ energy infrastructure for growing demand from artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, industrial development, and the Permian Basin.

The grid upgrades are part of broader efforts to address rising electricity needs driven by economic growth and the expansion of energy-intensive industries, including data centers and manufacturing facilities.

The AEP Texas financing marks the third utility project supported through the DOE’s Energy Dominance Financing Program, which aims to accelerate investments in critical energy infrastructure, improve grid resilience, and strengthen energy security.
